Remy Ma - There's Something About Remy: Based On A True Story
HHH/LNN Official Rating: 4/5By Holla At'Cha Boy Ed
Remy Ma is a problem, scratch that a monster, matter of fact she's the female gangsta MC prototype right now. Remy has gained popularity from "literally" destroying Lady Luck at the infamous freestyle battles at Mic Club. However, her recent explosion on the mixtape circuit is what pushed me to take notice of this album. Big ups Remy you may not have created a classic but you have definitely left your stamp on 2006.
There's Something About Remy features heavy hitting a-list producers, most notably David Banner's head nodding single ("I'm") among many other gems dropped by the likes of Alchemist, Sean C, and Cool and Dre to name a few. The key to a successful debut is being original as well as showing variety which Remy displays to the fullest extent.
Take the intro track which follows words from the late great Big Pun, "She's Gone" - a fire beat and Remy's usual formula: excellent delivery and great lyrics. The big surprise on this album comes though with the variety of subject matter that is included. "Bilingual" which features Ivy Queen shows that Remy obviously paid attention in Spanish class and spits with the intensity that her mentor Pun showed her, rhyming hard in both English and Spanish. But, I never thought on this debut that I would hear deep subject matter from Remy, I could have only expected what I heard on the mixtapes, basically just watching Remy Ma go animal. Tracks such as "Guilty" which showcases Remy's story telling knack describes her looking in her dark heart and finding out that she too feels pain. She goes into depth describing to you what occurred one day during a hit and run and the aftermath which affected her deeply.
You thought Remy was done suprising you at this point of the album, until you come to the concluding song "Still" where Ms. Martin gives you a bigger glimpse into her life. As the hook goes "I'm just trying to reach my goals and remain focused, but ain't sh*t changed". The song talks about her baby father being jealous while she was in the studio trying to complete her debut thinking that she was always lying. Also how she had to diss some of her friends to get here, but its still all love, she just had to set time apart to finish this project.
Remy Martin may not be the prettiest girl in the world, but there's something about her that says sexy. Obviously thick Remy holds her own on the mic and only comp I see may be Rah Digga at this point in time. This is a great debut finally and I just hope her sophmore effort is just as solid. The "Crazy" thing is its not just her being a female she can hold her own against a changing industry of any MC, and as Remy said it best "I spit like I got a d*ck".
