Jermaine Dupri - Jermaine Dupri Presents...Young, Fly & Flashy Vol. 1

HHH Official Rating: 1.5/5
Beats rating: 2/5
Lyrics rating: 1/5
Music Quality: 1/5

by the god Dirty Backpacks

On my TV show, I'm known to be a pretty harsh critic when it comes to some things in Hip Hop. And while a lot of people respect my opinions and more agree than disagree, there are those who have come to me and said "why do you always seem to give good grades on Hiphophavoc? Are you afraid to dis the albums you review? Were you told to be nice?"

It's not that at all. But this has honestly been a banner year for Hip Hop - truth be told, there's a lot more good than bad that has come out this year, from ALL regions, new school and old school. There's just a lot of good albums to choose from.

THIS IS NOT ONE OF THOSE ALBUMS.

(Sigh)....Jermaine Dupri. Say what you want about the guy, but he's a winner when it comes to this music biz. This guy is responsible for Kriss Kross, Jagged Edge, Bow Wow, Da Brat, and other top-selling acts. He's worked with damn-near everyone in the music biz, from Jay-Z to Biggie, Dru Hill to Xscape (I'm taking y'all back, right?). Super-producer Lil' Jon learned his skills working for - you guessed it - JD. And, he is single-handedly responsible for the resurgence in the careers of Bow Wow, Usher (he handled Usher's 1st really big album, My Way) and Mariah Carey (The Emancipation Of Mimi is the comeback story of the year and is around 5x platinum at this point). Hell, he's done so much for so long, he even once foolishly stated on BET's 106 & Park that he was a better producer than Dr. Dre AND Timbaland!

Plus, I think his girl is kinda fly (Janet - Miss Jackson if ya nasty!)

So, with this pedigree and the undeniable penchant for making hits, I have one question:

WHAT THE F**K IS THIS CRAP?!?

I don't think I'm exxagerating or overstating it when I say this is THE worst Southern album of the year (thus far). I've listened to it 4 times from beginning to end, and it just gets worse each time. How could you do this, JD?

My first thought when looking at the back was "where's SunN.Y.?" Surely, the 106 & Park freestyle legend deserved to be on JD's 1st So So Def compilation in some time, right?

Believe me, he may have saved his career by not putting him on this - that's how bad this is. And really, there's no excuse - JD is an excellent producer, and he's got Daz in his camp, a very good producer in his own right. Yet, Daz produces nothing on the album, and JD himself only co-produces the lead single "Gotta Getcha", which, as you've already heard, is an anemic, generic club single about tricking dollars. I don't trick and don't like talk about tricking, so this song holds no value for me. The best part of this song is getting to see Janet's a$$ in the video, but even that makes you say "Damn - JD got Janet ho-in' in his own video?"

Normally, I would go through all the producers, but I figure I'll save them and their families the embarassment of associating their names with this project. Actually, in all fairness, the beats aren't horrible at all - I'd say they were okay, or at least so-so (get it - So So?). But this cadre of rappers he's assembled - ugh.

These no-name bums should never be allowed near a mic again. Oh, he was smart enough to sprinkle some known commodities throughout the CD, but this tactic actually backfires - artists like Pastor Troy, Bun B, Daz, Bow Wow, and Da Brat only serve to accentuate how crappy the unknowns are. And when you include J-Kwon in anything, you're already acknowledging you're not exactly looking for quality. Even the promising newcomer Stat Quo offers nothing on the ear-bleed inducing "10 Toes", where even Daz's lyrics can't save this track from being pure caca.

EVERY song isn't horrible - the remix to "I Think They Like Me" has been moving butts on the dancefloor for sometime now, and the beat definitely makes you want to move. But when you think about the fact that the hottest lines on the song come from BOW WOW, well....'nuff said. And Pastor Troy's tear the club up anthem "Just To Fight" is guaranteed to hype a ni99a up in the club - this may be the best complete song on the album. Finally, "Kodak Moment" has Bun B and Pastor Troy not neccesarily at their best, but still good enough to make this song a decent listen. The thing that ruins it - Kavious. Where'd he find this clown - karaoke night at TGI Friday's?

KP & Envyi (remember them from the hit "Swing My Way" back in the day?) serve up a semi-decent offering with "Put Cha Hands Up", but the song probably would've been better without KP's corny rhymes. Or Envyi - I'm not sure who's the singer and who's the rapper. Suffice to say, it should've simply been a song without the raps.

But everything else is just crap. There's no other way I can put it. The Miss B. song "Grown Man" (featuring Torica) is just tired, corny subject matter about a chick wanting a thug to get "his grown man on". And Cato is trash. Young Capone and T-Rock are trash. And T.Waters? I actually heard this kid had a buzz. Where - in his headphones?

And let me say this with all sincerity - the "bonus track" "Young, Fly & Flashy" is the worst song I've heard all year. In any genre. By any artist. Period.

I like JD. But to offer this type of crap to the public is insulting. My only guess is that he's been promising to release stuff from these "artists" and to shut them up put them all on a compilation to see how they'd do. JD, if this is the best these cats have to offer, cut all ties to them NOW - before they ruin your stellar reputation.

People, the only good use for this CD is to use it as a coaster for your drinks. Other than maybe 3 songs, this is worthless. And believe me, I think I was actually generous with my grade - the remix to "I Think They Like Me" and solid contributions by Bun B and Pastor Troy really save this album from getting a worse mark.

If you want a good Southern compilation, try Big Boi's Got Purp joint. But if you want good stuff from Jermaine Dupri, you better go cop Mariah's album - cuz this ain't it.

1. "I'm Hot" (Young Capone w/Daz & T-Rock) [1.5]
2. "Gotta Get'Cha" (Jermaine Dupri) [2]

I usually have some beef with the reviews given by dirty backpacks cause there is that bias when it comes to east coast vs every other place, but I agree with you whole heartily on this one. This was one of the worst cd's ever made! My girl bought this bullshit and I'm still thanking her for wasting her money instead of mine. THIS IS NOT WORTH BUYING AT ALL!!! JD should be extremely disappointed with this effort not to mention the fact he must be loosing his hearing cause he actually thought this shit was worth putting out. JD, please kill everyone who was on this album and had anything to do with it and start from scratch ro risk loosing the last 5 fans you have left in this world. And please STOP RAPPING!!!!

J Prince. You sure seem to have a lot of opinions on HHH. But I don't know WHAT you're smoking when you try to say I'm biased. Hmm...let's see. Pharcyde got a good review from me, and last time I checked, they were West Coast. Ying Yang got a good review, and last time I checked they were Dirty South. I've named Ice-T and Outkast as having classic albums in past reviews.

What exactly are you talking about?

YOU seem to be the biased one. If anyone loves all regions of music, it's me. Even in my DPG review, I professed how much I like those dudes.

Before you try to claim we're biased, do ya homework, homie. And if you really think our opinions are that off-base, you're more than welcome to start your OWN website.

    Good luck with that.

When I said I have a problem with the reviews given by dirty backpacks I should have said HHH instead of calling out that one person cause you don't review all music for this site. My bad on that one! You just did the review on JD's bullshit joint so I put your name cause it was the last thing I seen. It just seems to me that the bullshit east coast joints that nobody else listens to excpet niggas on the east coast get a pass. My example is AZ's sorry album. Yall gave that shit a 4 meanwhile yall gave that Boyz in the Hood joint a terrible rating? I didn't say every west coast or down south joint yall rated got bad reviews, I said there is a bias between how yall rate a east coast joint cause yall think that shit is "real hip hop". I heard references like NY is the "mecca" of hip hop on this site, so naturaly there will be that little bitof a bias when reviewing their music. The east coast owes a lot to the west but they will never get that repsect. You know as well as I do that dudes on the east coast don't bump west coast shit like that or down south shit cause they think it is wack or they aren't MC's they are rappers. I grew up on the east coast so I know how that shit is. When you hear someone mention the greatest MC's of all time they give you the same answers. Biggie, Jay, Nas, Rakim, etc... There is never no mention of Tupac! Tupac without a doubt was the most talented man to have ever bless a mic. He did more for the game than any other artist but he gets no repsect for that. Yeah, no one will speak bad on him but he doesn't get the credit he deserves from the east coast. You seemed a little touchy about my comments dawg? That's cute :) Damn, didn't you read the rest of my comment? I agreed with you on that JD bullshit, so you know I'm not trying to get garabage over regardless of their region. Be easy B. LOL That is a good idea about me starting my own site. Maybe you could come work for me, but you can't be so emotional over these comments man. LOL

Im sorry, I had to jump in here....Did you just compare AZ's album to Boyz n da hood? Dont go criticizing people here on HHH and then come back calling AZ's album sorry. And I reviewed that album, gave it a 4.5 actually, even better then a 4, and its worth every point.

Well, kid, before you get ME to work for YOU, perhaps you should get in the game first. I write for this site, about to launch my own site, and operate the only independently owned Hip Hop TV show that appears on a major affiliate in the entire country.

Don't try to be an NBA owner when you can't even sign a 10 day contract.

And, here's the funnything, like I said in another response on this site to one of your comments - the guys who run and operate this site (Red, Nitti, T Boogs, Me, R.Motions, etc.) all LOVE 2pac. In fact, he's my favorite MC of all-time, so again I ask - what are you talking about? Is it really necessary to write some useless diatribe about how great 2pac is when everyone on the site likes him? Stop assuming.

And no one got touchy. I'm just the guy who likes to breakdown bullshit comments the quickest. But if you really want to debate, you're more than welcome to post silly comments in one of the forums - I'm sure Nitti will be more than welcome to debate with you - but be careful, he's been known to eat cats up....

You're entitled to your opinions, and we here at HHH respect that. But please - we love ALL Hip Hop, not just East Coast stuff. Chamillionaire didn't get a bad grade, nor did Paul Wall. And Bun B's album is dope. Stop crusading for a cause that is irrelevant when it comes to this site.

Everyone has preferences - like I said, if your opinions are so strong, let us know when you start your own site. We'll let the world know. Then, since you've obviously been to journalism school, you can show us how to properly cover Hip Hop.

First off let me get at redman122 for his comment about the Boyz in the Hood joint. I thought the album was tight, and more of the muthafuckas I know bump that shit but aint never thought about bying AZ's shit. Like I said, that's the shit only east coast cats listen too. Go to Compton, Houston,KC,Atlanta, etc... and they aint probably heard of AZ. I'd like to see his numbers in other markets cause I bet he don't do that well outside of NY and the east coast, but as usual NY cats will rep him cause he's from their and they think that garbage is "real hip hop".

I really don't give a fuck about your personal accomplishments DBP! I just like messing with sensitive niggas who don't listen and can't handle the truth. AGAIN, I DIDN'T SAY EVERYTHING YALL REVIEWED FROM OTHER AREAS GOT BAD RATINGS, and do you even know what bias means? Here is the definition:A preference or an inclination, especially one that inhibits impartial judgment. Did you notice that word preferrence? You just stated that "everyone has preferrences", so by definition you just admitted that your BIASED. As I stated, bias doesn't mean you don't like music from other areas, it just means when it comes to east coast shit your biased or excuse me..you prefer that shit over other music. I seen that you had Pac as your top MC and for that I give you props. See, even when I strongly disagree with you I still have the ability to give your proops on things I agree on. You didn't even mention one thing about our agreeing on JD's joint cause you were too worried about me challenging your ideas to realy breakdwon what I said. You went on this diatribe about how much you like other music when I never said anything about you not liking other music. I just said that there is a bias or excuse me a preferrence towards the east coast. Its a natural thing and for you to try and deny it makes you sound foolish. As far as someone "eating me up" that laughable! Even when I'm wrong I can still debate with the best of them and sometimes I like to play the devils advocate for the love of debating. What's funny is I actually enjoy these exchanges. Keep replying DBP!

You know what? I like to debate too! So we have something in common.

If it makes you sleep better at night to think I'm "sensitive", then go right ahead - I could truly care less if that's your opinion. But if you lobby attacks against the site, you have to be ready for responses - which is actually what I think you're looking for. You're an attention diva - we get it.

You've made some good points. But in terms of your hard-on for what is and isn't biased, you should then include yourself in that grouping of who or what is biased - because EVERYONE is biased. I'm not even going to argue about whether or not we here at HHH have a NY bias with you anymore - if we do, so what. It's our site - we can do that if we like.

But I like your style, kid. At least in your arguments you have some sense in the points you've made, and for that we gotta give you a certain degree of respect. And since I always play devil's advocate myself, I can understand where you're coming from.

Oh, and "preference" isn't spelled with two Rs.

You believe we have an NY bias - you can believe what you want. The truth is this has been a great year for Hip Hop, and there's been a lot of great Hip Hop released from everywhere - including New York.

As for AZ - I got heads all over the South that love that album, not just NY. Stop hating - I think it's not so much we have a NY bias, but moreso you have a bias AGAINST NY Hip Hop.

But you're right on two major accounts- 2pac is the nicest of all time, and god-damn this Jermaine Dupri album sucks!

Thanks for your responses. Keep reading HHH, posting in our forums, news, and reviews, and being an overall Stan - oops, I mean fan of the site - we appreciate it!

Just make sure to let us know when you get your site up.....

I have to admit I like you DBP! If you check out my comments on the favorite MC's you'll see that I'm honest and willing to admit I have a bias against NY music. The majority of that shit sounds the same, so I frequently have to take a step back when giving my opinion. As I stated earlier be biased doesn't mean you don'y like music from that area. If you check my top MC's you'll see most of them from NY. Lloyd Banks is probably my favorite artist right now for real. The Boy Wonder aka Blu Hefner aka Lloyd Banks is one of the illest in the game. I'm glad you at least admitted to having a little bit of an affinity towards NY music. At least we can move on from this point cause I clearly came out on top! Don't trip though, I'm still a Stan..oops I mean fan so you don't have to worry about me showing up at your spot wanting an autograph. By the way, where do you live at anyway? LOL I got a little more respect for you DBP cause at least you respond and your willing to admit when your wrong. By the way, I have a real job so I don't have time to be meticulous about misspellings, grammer, puntuation, etc.. If I had all day to sit on my ass and review records like you my comments would be all the way on point. LOL Just fucking with you! Holla back DBP whenever!!!
