I gotta to be honest with you; I was kind of skeptical about a Q-Tip solo performance. I did not think he had enough solid solo hits to carry a show. The guard outside of the Blender Theatre in New York City agreed with me as well. Of course, it turned out I was totally wrong.
Former Tribe Called Quest front man, Q-Tip, was phenomenal. Q-Tip started, almost right on time, carrying a ferociously cool and hip swagger. This was definitely a different Q-Tip than the one we all grow up on. His style was modern and confident, and he sung most of the hooks in his new songs from his up and coming album, which will hit stores late winter 2008.
Q-Tip has proven to be quite the performer on his own but it sure helped to have a live band and legendary EPMD DJ Scratch supporting his groove. I had a fun time watching him, especially his joy in being onstage; it was infectious. He showcased many of his classic lyrics, like “Footprints,” “Electric Relaxation,” and “Higher”, and even invited a fan to recite the Phife Dawg’s words to “Check The Rhime” (Check out the challenged and video below).
What a way to kick off CMJ 2007. There’s no doubt Q-Tip’s performance will be one of the most talked about shows of CMJ 2007. You can catch more Q-Tip clips - and those from other CMJ performers - throughout the week on this blog.
